Planting & Care
Sweet pea seeds benefit from scarification or soaking in water for 24 hours before sowing to improve germination. Sow seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost, or directly outdoors after the danger of frost has passed. Plant seeds about 1 inch deep in well-drained soil. Provide a trellis or support for the vines to climb.
Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Fertilize lightly when plants are young. Deadhead spent flowers regularly to encourage continued blooming. Sweet peas are cool-season annuals and may decline in hot summer weather; provide afternoon shade in warmer climates to extend bloom time.
