Perilla, also known as shiso or Korean perilla, is a versatile culinary herb prized for its aromatic green leaves. This variety produces broad, serrated green leaves that are widely used in Korean, Japanese, and other Asian cuisines. The leaves have a unique, refreshing flavor with notes of mint, basil, and anise, making them a favorite for wrapping grilled meats, garnishing dishes, and adding to pickles and salads.

Easy to grow from seed, this non-GMO herb thrives in warm weather and makes an attractive addition to garden beds, containers, and herb gardens. With 500 seeds, you'll have plenty to start a bountiful harvest or share with friends.

  • Spacing: 12–18 inches apart

Planting & Care

Sow perilla seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost, or directly in the garden after the danger of frost has passed. Press seeds lightly into the soil surface; they need light to germinate. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Germination typically occurs within 7–21 days at temperatures around 65–75°F.

Once seedlings have a few sets of true leaves, thin or transplant them to their final spacing. Perilla prefers rich, well-drained soil and regular watering. Pinch back the growing tips to encourage bushier growth and harvest leaves as needed throughout the season. Leaves can be used fresh or preserved by drying or pickling.
