Prince's Plume (Stanleya pinnata) is a striking native wildflower of the American West, prized for its tall, feathery spikes of bright yellow flowers that rise above blue-green foliage. This drought-tolerant perennial thrives in hot, dry, and rocky sites, making it an excellent choice for xeriscapes, native plant gardens, and pollinator-friendly landscapes. Its long bloom season and architectural form add vertical interest and a distinctive Western character to sunny borders and wildflower meadows.

Easy to grow from seed, Prince's Plume is well suited to low-water gardens and restoration plantings. It attracts bees and other pollinators while tolerating poor, sandy, or gravelly soils where many ornamentals struggle.

Planting & Care

Sow Prince's Plume seeds in a well-drained seed-starting mix, pressing them lightly into the surface and keeping the medium barely moist. Provide bright light and moderate warmth for germination. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots before moving them to the garden after the last frost.

Choose a sunny site with sandy or gravelly, well-drained soil. Water young plants regularly during their first season to help them establish, then reduce watering as they mature. Prince's Plume resents soggy conditions, so avoid overwatering and heavy clay soils. Deadhead spent blooms if desired, or leave seed heads to self-sow and feed birds.
