Red Flame Phlox is a tall, clump-forming perennial prized for its vibrant red flowers and sweet fragrance. In summer, sturdy stems rise above lance-shaped green foliage, topped with dense clusters of blooms that create a striking display in borders, cottage gardens, and cutting gardens. This easy-to-grow perennial returns year after year, attracting butterflies and hummingbirds to the garden.

With its brilliant color and tall habit, Red Flame Phlox works well as a backdrop for lower-growing perennials or as a standalone specimen. The flowers are also excellent for fresh bouquets, bringing garden beauty indoors.

Planting & Care

Sow Red Flame Phlox seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost. Press seeds lightly into the soil surface and keep moist at around 65–70°F (18–21°C). Germination typically occurs in 14–28 days. Once seedlings have several true leaves, transplant them into individual pots and gradually acclimate them to outdoor conditions before planting in the garden after the danger of frost has passed.

Choose a sunny to partially shaded location with well-drained soil. Water regularly during the first growing season to help plants establish. Apply a layer of mulch to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage continued bloom, and cut back stems in late fall or early spring. Divide clumps every few years to maintain vigor.
