Rosa palustris, commonly known as Swamp Rose, is a native North American shrub rose valued for its graceful habit and wildlife-friendly blooms. This wetland species produces single pink flowers in summer that attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, followed by red rose hips that feed birds and small wildlife through fall and winter.

Swamp Rose is an excellent choice for rain gardens, pond margins, stream banks, and other consistently moist areas where many roses struggle. Its arching stems and narrow green foliage create a natural, informal look that works well in native plant gardens, pollinator plantings, and wildlife habitat restorations.

Planting & Care

Sow Swamp Rose seeds in a moist, well-draining seed-starting mix. Seeds benefit from cold stratification; refrigerate in a damp medium for several weeks before sowing, or sow outdoors in fall and allow natural winter chilling. Keep the medium consistently moist but not waterlogged, and provide bright light. Germination can be slow and uneven, so be patient.

Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots and grow them on in a moist, sunny location. When planting in the landscape, choose a site with consistently moist soil, such as a rain garden, pond margin, or low area that holds moisture. Water regularly during establishment, and mulch to retain soil moisture. Prune lightly as needed to shape the shrub and remove dead wood.
