Planting & Care

Start Snowball Y Improved Cauliflower seeds indoors 4 to 6 weeks before the last expected frost for a spring crop, or in midsummer for a fall harvest. Sow seeds about 1/4 inch deep in a seed-starting mix, keeping the soil consistently moist and around 65 to 70°F for reliable germination. Harden off seedlings before transplanting into the garden.

Set transplants into rich, well-drained soil in full sun, spacing them 18 to 24 inches apart. Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist, and mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Feed with a balanced vegetable fertilizer according to package directions. For best head quality, blanch the curds by tying the outer leaves over the developing head when it reaches about 2 to 3 inches across. Harvest when heads are firm, compact, and fully sized.
