Symphyotrichum puniceum, commonly known as Swamp Aster, is a native perennial prized for its late-season display of purple to lavender-blue flowers. This wetland wildflower brings vibrant color to rain gardens, pond edges, and moist meadow plantings when most other perennials have finished blooming. Its nectar-rich blooms are highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, making it an excellent choice for wildlife-friendly landscapes.

Swamp Aster forms upright, clump-forming plants with lance-shaped green foliage. It thrives in consistently moist to wet soils and is well-suited to naturalized areas, bioswales, and native plant gardens. The cheerful fall blooms provide an important late-season food source for pollinators and add long-lasting color to the autumn garden.

Planting & Care

Sow Swamp Aster seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost, or directly in the garden in fall. Lightly press seeds into the soil surface; do not cover deeply, as light aids germination. Keep the soil consistently moist until germination occurs. Once seedlings have several sets of true leaves, transplant them outdoors after the danger of frost has passed, spacing them 18-24 inches apart in a sunny to partly shaded location with moist soil.

Swamp Aster is relatively low-maintenance once established. Water regularly during dry periods, especially in the first growing season, to help plants settle in. Divide clumps every 2-3 years to maintain vigor and prevent overcrowding. In late fall or early spring, cut back old stems to encourage fresh growth. This native perennial is generally pest and disease resistant when grown in appropriate conditions.
