Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) is a classic culinary herb prized for its aromatic leaves and versatility in the kitchen. This low-growing perennial is a staple in herb gardens, borders, and containers, offering both flavor and ornamental value. Its tiny, fragrant leaves and delicate flowers also attract pollinators, making it a welcome addition to pollinator-friendly landscapes.

Easy to grow from seed, thyme thrives in sunny, well-drained spots and tolerates drought once established. Use it fresh or dried to season meats, vegetables, soups, and sauces, or simply enjoy its pleasant scent and texture in the garden.

Plant Features

  • Aromatic, small leaves with a robust, earthy flavor
  • Compact, bushy growth habit suitable for borders and containers
  • Produces tiny flowers that attract bees and other pollinators
  • Perennial in suitable climates; often grown as an annual elsewhere
  • Drought-tolerant once established

Growing Information

  • Botanical Name: Thymus vulgaris
  • Plant Type: Perennial herb (often grown as annual)
  • Sunlight: Full sun
  • Soil: Well-drained, sandy or loamy soil; tolerates poor soil
  • Water Requirements: Low to moderate; allow soil to dry between waterings
  • Growth Habit: Upright to mounding, 6–12 inches tall
  • USDA Hardiness Zones: 5–9
  • Bloom Season: Late spring to early summer
  • Spacing: 12–18 inches apart

Planting & Care

Sow thyme seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost or directly outdoors after the danger of frost has passed. Press seeds lightly into the soil surface; they need light to germinate. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged until seedlings emerge. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, thin or transplant them to their final spacing.

Thyme prefers a sunny location with excellent drainage. Water regularly during establishment, then reduce frequency as plants mature. Mulch lightly to suppress weeds, but keep mulch away from the crown to prevent rot. Harvest leaves as needed throughout the growing season, and trim plants after flowering to encourage bushy growth.
