Virgin's Bower (Clematis virginiana) is a vigorous, twining perennial vine native to eastern North America. It is prized for its masses of small, fragrant white flowers that appear in late summer to early fall, followed by attractive fluffy seed heads. This fast-growing climber is an excellent choice for covering fences, trellises, arbors, and pergolas, and it attracts pollinators such as bees and butterflies.

As a native species, Virgin's Bower is well-suited to naturalized areas, woodland gardens, and pollinator-friendly landscapes. It can also be used to screen unsightly structures or to add vertical interest to the garden. Its delicate foliage and airy flower clusters provide a soft, romantic look.

Planting & Care

To grow Virgin's Bower from seeds, start seeds indoors in late winter or sow directly outdoors in fall after the last frost. Scarify seeds by nicking the seed coat or soaking in water for 24 hours to improve germination. Sow seeds about 1/4 inch deep in a moist seed-starting mix. Keep the soil consistently moist and maintain a temperature of around 70°F (21°C). Germination can be slow and erratic, often taking several weeks to months. Once seedlings have developed several true leaves, transplant them to their permanent location after hardening off.

Provide a trellis or support for the vines to climb. Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish a deep root system. Mulch around the base to conserve moisture and keep roots cool. Prune in late winter or early spring to control size and remove dead growth. Virgin's Bower is generally low-maintenance once established.
