White Althea, also known as Rose of Sharon or Hibiscus syriacus, is a deciduous flowering shrub prized for its large, pure white blooms that appear from midsummer into fall. Each flower features a prominent center, creating a striking contrast against the deep green foliage. This versatile shrub adds late-season color to mixed borders, foundation plantings, and hedges, and it can also be grown as a specimen plant in a large container.

Rose of Sharon is a low-maintenance, heat-tolerant shrub that attracts pollinators and hummingbirds. It is adaptable to a range of soil types and, once established, tolerates drought and urban conditions. The white flowering form offers a clean, elegant look in the landscape and pairs well with other perennials and shrubs.

Planting & Care

Plant your bare root Rose of Sharon in early spring or late fall while the shrub is dormant. Soak the roots in water for a few hours before planting. Dig a hole wide enough to spread the roots without crowding, place the plant at the same depth it was growing previously, and backfill with native soil. Water thoroughly to settle the soil and eliminate air pockets. Apply a layer of mulch around the base, keeping it a few inches away from the stem.

Water regularly during the first growing season to help the roots establish. Once established, Rose of Sharon is fairly drought tolerant but performs best with consistent moisture. Prune in late winter or early spring to shape the plant and encourage vigorous growth and abundant blooms. This shrub flowers on new wood, so pruning before growth begins will not reduce flowering.
