Boltonia asteroides, commonly known as false aster or white doll's daisy, is a native perennial wildflower that brings late-season beauty to meadows, rain gardens, and pollinator plantings. Its clouds of small white, daisy-like flowers appear in late summer and early fall, providing an important nectar source when many other blooms have faded. The plants form upright, bushy clumps with narrow, gray-green foliage that adds fine texture to the garden border.

This adaptable native is prized for its ability to thrive in moist soils and its tolerance of occasional flooding, making it an excellent choice for rain gardens, pond edges, and low-lying areas. The cheerful white flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects, while the seeds that follow offer food for birds. Boltonia asteroides works beautifully in naturalized plantings, cottage gardens, and cut flower arrangements.

Planting & Care

Sow Boltonia asteroides seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost, or direct sow in late fall or early spring. Lightly press seeds into the soil surface; do not cover deeply, as light aids germination. Keep the soil consistently moist until seedlings emerge. Once seedlings have several sets of true leaves, transplant them outdoors after the danger of frost has passed, spacing them 18 to 24 inches apart in a sunny to partially shaded location.

Boltonia asteroides is relatively low-maintenance once established. Water regularly during the first growing season to help roots settle in. In subsequent years, the plants are fairly drought-tolerant but perform best with consistent moisture. Divide clumps every 2 to 3 years in early spring to maintain vigor. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage additional blooms, or leave seed heads for birds. In late fall, cut back stems to ground level after the foliage dies back.
