Black Seeded Simpson is a classic heirloom leaf lettuce prized for its tender, light green leaves and dependable performance in the garden. This fast-growing variety is a favorite for spring and fall plantings, providing a steady supply of mild, crisp leaves for salads, sandwiches, and garnishes. Its loose-leaf habit allows you to harvest individual outer leaves or cut the entire plant, making it a versatile choice for both beginner and experienced gardeners.

With its quick maturity and tolerance to cool weather, Black Seeded Simpson is an excellent addition to raised beds, containers, or traditional garden rows. The plants grow vigorously and produce attractive, frilly leaves that add texture and color to fresh garden harvests.

Planting & Care

Sow Black Seeded Simpson lettuce seeds directly in the garden as soon as the soil can be worked in spring, or in late summer for a fall crop. Plant seeds about 1/4 inch deep and keep the soil evenly moist until germination. Thin seedlings to the recommended spacing to allow for healthy growth. For a continuous harvest, sow small batches every two to three weeks.

Provide consistent moisture and mulch around plants to keep the soil cool and retain water. Harvest outer leaves when they are young and tender, or cut the entire plant about an inch above the soil line for a second growth. Lettuce prefers cooler temperatures and may bolt in hot weather, so provide afternoon shade in warmer climates.
