The American Persimmon (Diospyros virginiana) is a native North American fruit tree valued for its sweet, flavorful fruit and attractive, adaptable growth habit. This deciduous tree produces small, orange to purple fruits that ripen in fall and are enjoyed fresh or used in baking, jams, and preserves. American Persimmon is also a host plant for several butterfly species and provides wildlife habitat, making it a great choice for edible landscapes, native plant gardens, and permaculture plantings.

These bare root plants are 10-12 inches tall and are ready to establish in Zones 4-9. With proper care, they will grow into productive trees that offer both beauty and harvest for years to come.

Planting & Care

Plant bare root American Persimmon trees in early spring or late fall while they are dormant. Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil. Dig a hole wide enough to accommodate the roots spread out, place the tree at the same depth it grew in the nursery, and backfill with soil. Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged during the first growing season. Mulch around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, but keep mulch away from the trunk.

Once established, American Persimmon is relatively low-maintenance. Prune as needed to shape the tree and remove dead or crossing branches. Fertilize lightly in early spring if growth is weak. These trees are generally pest and disease resistant and can live for many decades.
