Common Juniper is a hardy, evergreen coniferous shrub reaching a mature height of 1 to 5 meters (3 to 16 feet) with a wide, spreading habit. Its dense needle-like foliage ranges from dark green to blue-green, complemented in cooler seasons by small, fleshy female seed cones that ripen from green to a dusty blue-purple and take two to three years to mature.
More compact than tree-type junipers, this slow-growing shrub is often used as a low-maintenance evergreen specimen, hedge, groundcover, or container plant, and its woody growth makes it a favorite for bonsai and rock gardens. It performs best in full sun and in well-drained soils from sandy to rocky, tolerating dry conditions once established and requiring minimal pruning. Species: Juniperus communis. Type: Evergreen coniferous shrub. Plant_Habit: Low, spreading to upright shrub. Sun: Full sun. Soil: Well-drained sandy or rocky soil; tolerates poor, dry soils once established. Days_to_Harvest: Not applicable. Zones: 2 to 7 (USDA). Germination: Cold stratification 90 to 120 days at 1 to 5 degrees C (34 to 41 degrees F) is needed; sow in fall for natural stratification or cold-stratify artificially; germination is often slow and irregular over 1 to 6 months. Sowing: Surface sow and lightly cover with 3 to 6 mm (1/8 to 1/4 inch) of soil. Spacing: 60 to 120 cm (2 to 4 feet) apart. Notes: Drought tolerant once established; growth is slow; provide a cold period for reliable germination.
