Planting & Care

Plant bare root strawberries in early spring or fall when the soil is workable. Soak the roots in water for 30 minutes before planting. Dig a hole large enough to accommodate the roots, and set the plant so the crown (where roots meet stems) is at soil level. Backfill with soil, firm gently, and water thoroughly. Space plants 12-18 inches apart in rows 3-4 feet apart.

Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, especially during flowering and fruiting. Mulch around plants to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Remove runners to encourage fruit production, and renovate beds after harvest. In colder zones, apply a layer of mulch in winter to protect crowns from freezing.
