Native Persimmon (Diospyros virginiana) is a North American fruit tree valued for its sweet, edible fruit and attractive shade canopy. These bare root trees, 6-12 inches tall, are ready to establish in your landscape. Native persimmons are adaptable and can be grown for fruit production, wildlife habitat, or as an ornamental shade tree.

With its glossy green leaves and fall color, the native persimmon adds seasonal interest to yards and orchards. The fruit is astringent until fully ripe, then becomes soft and sweet, ideal for fresh eating, baking, and preserves. These trees are dioecious, meaning male and female flowers typically occur on separate trees, so plant multiple for reliable pollination and fruit set.

Planting & Care

Plant bare root trees as soon as possible after arrival. Soak roots in water for a few hours before planting. Dig a hole wide enough to spread the roots, place the tree at the same depth it grew in the nursery, and backfill with native soil. Water thoroughly to settle the soil and eliminate air pockets. Apply a layer of mulch around the base, keeping it away from the trunk.

Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish a strong root system. Once established, persimmons are relatively low-maintenance. Prune as needed to shape the tree and remove dead or crossing branches. Fertilize sparingly in early spring if growth is weak. Protect young trees from deer and rodents if necessary.
