Planting & Care
Sweet pea seeds benefit from scarification or soaking before sowing to improve germination. Sow seeds outdoors in early spring, once the danger of frost has passed, or start indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost. Plant seeds about 1 inch deep in well-drained soil. Provide a trellis or support for the vines to climb. Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Fertilize lightly if needed, but avoid excessive nitrogen, which can reduce flowering. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage continued flowering.
Sweet peas are relatively low-maintenance once established. Watch for pests like aphids and provide good air circulation to prevent fungal diseases. With proper care, you'll enjoy a profusion of fragrant, colorful blooms throughout the season.
