Planting & Care

Sow Black Seeded Simpson lettuce seeds directly in the garden as soon as the soil can be worked in spring, or in late summer for a fall crop. Plant seeds about 1/8 to 1/4 inch deep, spacing them 1 to 2 inches apart initially, then thin to 6 to 12 inches apart to allow proper growth. Lettuce prefers cool weather and consistent moisture; water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Mulching can help retain moisture and keep the soil cool.

For continuous harvest, sow seeds every two to three weeks. Harvest outer leaves when they reach 4 to 6 inches tall, or cut the entire plant about an inch above the soil line to encourage regrowth. Lettuce is best harvested in the morning when leaves are crisp. Protect from extreme heat, which can cause bolting and a bitter taste.
