Culantro, also known as Ngo Gai, Recao, or Vietnamese coriander, is a tropical perennial herb prized in Southeast Asian and Latin American cooking for its bold, cilantro-like flavor with a hint of citrus and mint. Unlike cilantro, culantro holds its flavor well when cooked and thrives in heat, making it an excellent choice for warm-climate gardens and summer kitchens.

The plant forms a low rosette of long, serrated green leaves that can be harvested repeatedly. It is a natural fit for herb gardens, container plantings, and edible landscapes, and its distinctive foliage adds texture and interest wherever it grows.

Plant Features

  • Bold, cilantro-like flavor that stands up to cooking
  • Heat-tolerant and slow to bolt compared to cilantro
  • Long, serrated green leaves grow in a compact rosette
  • Can be grown in the ground or in containers
  • Provides a steady harvest of fresh leaves through the season

Growing Information

  • Botanical Name: Eryngium foetidum
  • Plant Type: Tropical perennial herb, often grown as an annual

  • Water Requirements: Moderate; keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged
  • Growth Habit: Low-growing rosette
  • USDA Hardiness Zones: 8-11
  • Bloom Season: Produces greenish flower spikes in warm weather
  • Mature Height: 12-18 inches
  • Germination Requirements: Sow seeds on the surface; light aids germination; keep warm and moist
  • Spacing: 8-12 inches apart

Planting & Care

Sow culantro seeds on the surface of a moist, well-draining seed-starting mix. Press the seeds gently into the soil without covering them completely, as light helps germination. Keep the medium consistently moist and warm, ideally between 70-85°F. Germination can be slow and uneven, so be patient. Once seedlings have several true leaves, transplant them to a sunny or partially shaded spot with rich, well-drained soil, spacing them 8-12 inches apart.

Culantro thrives in warm, humid conditions and benefits from regular watering. Mulch around plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Harvest outer leaves as needed, allowing the center of the rosette to continue producing. In cooler climates, grow culantro in containers so it can be moved indoors before frost.
