Edisto 47 Cantaloupe is a prized heirloom melon variety known for its exceptionally sweet, flavorful flesh and remarkable heat tolerance. Developed in South Carolina, this cultivar thrives in hot, humid conditions where other melons may struggle, making it a reliable choice for Southern gardens and warm climates. The vines produce round, slightly netted fruits with salmon-colored flesh that is juicy and aromatic, perfect for fresh eating, fruit salads, and desserts.

Whether you're a seasoned gardener or a beginner, Edisto 47 is easy to grow from seed and rewards you with a bountiful harvest. Its resistance to common melon diseases and ability to withstand heat stress make it a standout in the summer garden.

Planting & Care

Sow Edisto 47 cantaloupe seeds directly in the garden after the last frost, when soil has warmed to at least 70°F. Plant seeds 1 inch deep in hills or rows, spacing 36-48 inches apart. For earlier harvests, start seeds indoors 3-4 weeks before transplanting. Keep soil consistently moist during germination and growth, but avoid overhead watering to reduce disease risk. Mulch to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.

Provide plenty of space for vines to spread, and consider trellising to save space. Fertilize at planting and again when vines begin to run. Harvest when the fruit slips easily from the vine and the rind turns tan with a sweet aroma.
