Eleocharis acicularis, commonly known as spike rush or dwarf hairgrass, is a fine-textured aquatic grass that forms dense, carpet-like clumps of bright green foliage. Its thread-like leaves create a soft, natural look in ponds, water gardens, and boggy areas, making it a favorite for adding texture and movement to water features. This heirloom, non-GMO variety is well-suited for naturalizing along pond margins, in shallow water, or in consistently moist soil, where it provides excellent cover for small aquatic life and helps soften rocky edges.

Spike rush is a versatile plant that can be grown as a submerged or emergent aquatic grass, depending on water depth. It is often used in rain gardens, wildlife ponds, and container water gardens, where its compact growth habit and tolerance of wet conditions make it an easy choice for low-maintenance landscapes.

Planting & Care

To grow spike rush from seeds, sow them on the surface of wet, muddy soil or in shallow water in a container or directly in a pond margin. Do not bury the seeds deeply; they need light and consistent moisture to germinate. Keep the soil saturated and maintain a water temperature around 65-75°F for best results. Germination can be slow and uneven, so be patient and keep the area consistently wet.

Once seedlings are established, they can be transplanted into shallow water up to a few inches deep or into boggy soil. Spike rush thrives in full sun to partial shade and requires little maintenance beyond keeping the soil wet. Trim back dead foliage in early spring to encourage fresh growth. It can spread by rhizomes to form a dense carpet, making it an excellent choice for naturalizing pond edges and water features.
