The Flowering Dogwood (Cornus florida) is a beloved ornamental tree known for its spectacular spring display of large, four-petaled bracts that surround a central cluster of tiny true flowers. Its graceful, tiered branching and vibrant green foliage provide elegant structure in the landscape, and in autumn the leaves turn rich shades of red and purple. This understory native is perfect for woodland gardens, shaded borders, or as a specimen tree in a partially shaded lawn.

Beyond its spring beauty, the Flowering Dogwood offers year-round interest with bright red berries in fall that attract birds, and distinctive alligator-bark texture on mature trunks. It is a versatile, slow-growing tree that rewards gardeners with decades of seasonal charm.

Planting & Care

Plant your bare root Flowering Dogwood in early spring or late fall while the tree is dormant. Soak the roots in water for a few hours before planting. Choose a site with well-draining, acidic soil and partial shade, especially protection from harsh afternoon sun. Dig a hole wide enough to spread the roots comfortably, place the tree so the root crown sits at or slightly above soil level, and backfill with native soil. Water thoroughly after planting and apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base, keeping mulch away from the trunk.

Keep the soil evenly moist during the first growing season to help establish a strong root system. Once established, the tree is moderately drought tolerant but benefits from supplemental water during dry spells. Prune lightly in late winter to remove dead or crossing branches. Avoid disturbing the shallow root system, and maintain a layer of organic mulch to conserve moisture and moderate soil temperature.
