Planting & Care
Sow Genovese basil seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost or directly outdoors after the danger of frost has passed and soil has warmed. Press seeds lightly into the soil surface; do not cover deeply as they need light to germinate. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Once seedlings have two sets of true leaves, thin or transplant to 10-12 inches apart. For continuous harvest, pinch off flower buds to encourage leaf production.
Basil thrives in full sun and rich, well-drained soil. Water regularly, especially during dry spells, and mulch to retain moisture. Harvest leaves frequently to promote bushy growth. Basil is sensitive to cold; protect plants if temperatures drop below 50°F.
