Planting & Care

Start Mary Washington asparagus seeds indoors 8-12 weeks before the last frost. Soak seeds in water for 24 hours to improve germination. Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep in a moist seed-starting mix. Keep the soil consistently moist and warm. Once seedlings have several sets of true leaves and all danger of frost has passed, harden them off and transplant into a prepared bed with well-drained soil and full sun.

Asparagus is a long-term crop; plants will not be ready for a full harvest until their third year. In the first two years, allow the spears to grow into ferns to build strong root systems. Water regularly during dry spells and mulch to suppress weeds and conserve moisture. Cut back dead foliage in late fall or early winter. With proper care, your asparagus bed can remain productive for 15-20 years or more.
