Planting & Care

Sow Nelson F1 Brussels Sprouts seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost date, or direct sow in the garden after the danger of frost has passed. Plant seeds ¼ inch deep in seed-starting mix, keeping the soil moist and at a temperature of 65–75°F for best germination. Once seedlings have 2–3 true leaves, harden them off and transplant to the garden, spacing plants 18–24 inches apart in rows 24–36 inches apart.

Brussels sprouts require consistent moisture and benefit from a layer of mulch to keep soil cool and moist. Fertilize with a balanced vegetable fertilizer according to package directions. For fall crops, start seeds in mid-to-late summer. Harvest sprouts from the bottom of the stalk upward when they are firm and about 1–1.5 inches in diameter. Remove any yellowing leaves to encourage air circulation and reduce pest issues.
