Planting & Care
Plant your bare root Southern Magnolia in early spring or fall while it is still dormant. Soak the roots in water for a few hours before planting. Dig a hole wide enough to spread the roots comfortably and position the crown at or slightly above soil level. Backfill with native soil, tamp gently, and water thoroughly to settle the soil. Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base, keeping it away from the trunk.
Water deeply once a week during the first growing season to encourage deep rooting. Once established, the Southern Magnolia is moderately drought tolerant but performs best with consistent moisture. Prune only to remove dead or crossing branches, as the tree naturally maintains a handsome shape. Protect young trees from strong winds and extreme cold during the first few winters.
