Planting & Care

Sow Teddy Bear Sunflower seeds directly outdoors after the last frost date, when soil has warmed to at least 50°F (10°C). Plant seeds about 1 inch deep and 6 inches apart, thinning seedlings to 12-18 inches apart once they are a few inches tall. Keep the soil consistently moist during germination, which typically takes 7-14 days. For earlier blooms, start seeds indoors 2-3 weeks before the last frost in biodegradable pots to minimize root disturbance.

Once established, sunflowers are relatively low-maintenance. Water deeply and regularly, especially during dry spells, and provide support if grown in windy areas. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage continued blooming, or leave some seed heads for birds to enjoy.
