Planting & Care

Sow thyme seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost or directly outdoors after the danger of frost has passed. Press seeds lightly into the soil surface; they need light to germinate. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged until germination, which typically occurs in 14-28 days at 65-70°F (18-21°C). Once seedlings have a few sets of true leaves, thin or transplant them to their final spacing.

Thyme thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. Water regularly during establishment, then reduce frequency as plants mature. Mulch lightly to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, but keep mulch away from the crown to prevent rot. Harvest sprigs as needed, preferably in the morning for best flavor. Trim plants after flowering to encourage bushy growth.
